John Dowling died from wounds on 6th October, 1914, after having been brought back to the United Kingdom but as yet, there is no information, as to when and where he was wounded. The 1st Lincolnshire battalion was part of 9 Brigade3rd Division, that had arrived in France at the beginning of the war and had been involved in much of the early the fighting in August and September, 1914, including the Battle of the Aisne.
